Fourni Corseon - Thymaena / Φούρνοι Κορσεών - Θύμαινα

Οι Φούρνοι Κορσεών ειναι ενα νησί, μισή ώρα απο την Ικαρία, με πολλές μικρότερες νησίδες γύρω, με παράξενο σχήμα, δες τον χάρτη να καταλάβεις τι σχήμα έχουν οι Φούρνοι, βουτηγμένοι μέσα στο μπλε  του Αιγαίου. Πουθενά αλλού δεν ένιωσα μέρος τόσο βουτηγμένο στη θάλασσα.
Απέναντι, το νησί Θύμαινα φράζει τη δυτική πλευρά  των Φούρνων σαν σύντροφος, σαν παντοτινός φύλακας.
Ανάμεσα υπάρχει το ακατοίκητο νησάκι Κισσηρία.

Πήραν το όνομά τους λόγω του σχήματος οταν κοιτάξεις απο μακριά απο τη θάλασσα, ενα σχήμα κάπως σαν παλιός παραδοσιακός φούρνος. Και επειδή ήταν λημέρι κουρσάρων τα παλιά τα χρόνια, λέγεται "Οι φούρνοι των Κουρσάρων" ( των Κορσεών ).
Εχει λίγους κατοίκους και πολλές παραλίες, συχνά πιο εύκολα προσιτές δια θαλάσσης παρά απο ξηρά. Δεν μπορώ να φανταστώ  στους Φούρνους λέξεις όπως μόλυνση, θόρυβος, άγχος.
Υποδομές σε δωμάτια υπάρχουν, σε τιμές Ιουλίου αρκετά καλές εως φτηνές, λίγα μαγαζιά για καφέ και για φαγητό, και ηρεμία, απέραντη ηρεμία.
Oι θάλασσες  εκεί ειναι τέλειες και έχουν πολύ ψάρι.
Μερικές φωτογραφίες μπορούν ελπίζω να δώσουν μια  εικόνα  του πώς ειναι εκεί, σε μιά εσχατιά της Ελλάδας μας.

Fourni Corseon is an island, half an hour from Ikaria island, with many smaller islets around, with a strange shape -see the map- and they're deep in the Aegean sea blue.
Nowhere else I have felt such a sense like being deep in the blue sea.
Opposite resides the Thymaena island to the west like a friendly guardian.
Between the two islans there is the small  uninhabited island of Kissiria.
The name  "Fourni Corseon" comes out from the shape of the island. If you look at it from the sea, it looks like old traditional ovens ( fournos = oven ) and it was a hideout for pirates in the past centuries. [ Pirate =  Coursaros = Corseos ]
It has not many inhabitants and many beaches, however they are reachable by sea better than by land. You get to walk to reach many of the beaches.
I can't imagine words like pollution, noise  or anguish in Fourni.
There are enough rooms for rent,  prices were reasonable if not low.
A few cafes and fish taverns offer food and coffee, drinks. A calm place.
The seas are perfect and there is a lot of nice fish.
I hope that some pictures can show how the place looks like, at an edge of our Greece.

 The wonderful sunset of the Aegean Sea where you see the sun diving into the sea slowly before its light comes out. Magic !

Big Blue / Απέραντο γαλάζιο

 Photographing Ikaria island was a very interesting experience, the every day challenge was to discover the light, the shades and colors around and catch them in the camera in a vain try to keep the moment forever.
  Φωτογραφίζοντας την Ικαρία, είχα μία ενδιαφέρουσα εμπειρία, μια καθημερινή πρόκληση να ανακαλύψω το φώς, τις σκιες και τα χρώματα γύρω και να τα πιάσω με την κάμερα, σε μιά μάταιη προσπάθεια να κρατήσω τις στιγμές για πάντα.

 Η Ικαριώτικη ακτογραμμή συνήθως ειναι βραχώδης και μεγάλοι βράχοι συναντούν το μπλέ της θάλασσας σε μια συνάντηση έντονη αλλα αισθησιακή.
The Ikarian coastline is usually rocky and big rocks meet the sea blue that seems to me strong and so sensual.

At Iero beach / Στην παραλία Ιερό

Η παραλία Ιερό κοντά στο αεροδρόμιο και τον Φάρο είναι πανέμορφη.
The Iero beach near the airport and Faros is very beautiful.

I have travelled to many other places in Greece, but travelling Ikaria was very exciting.
Εχω ταξιδέψει κι αλλού σε πολλά μέρη στην Ελλάδα, μα της Ικαρίας το ταξίδεμα ηταν συναρπαστικό.

 Aghios Kirikos is the other harbor of the island at the south. The other one is Evdilos at north.
O Αγιος Κήρυκος ειναι το άλλο λιμάνι της Ικαρίας, στα νότια. Στα βόρεια ειναι η Εύδηλος.

.

And last, one picture of a food speciality of Ikaria. It's called "Soufiko" and it's very nice. Potatoes, eggplants, peppers, zucchini, in olive oil. And  some lemon, I think.
Και τέλος μια  σπεσιαλιτέ της Ικαρίας, το Σουφικό, με μελιτζάνες,  κολοκύθια, πατάτες και πιπεριές,  με λάδι ελιάς. Και λεμόνι, νομίζω.

I don't know if I will post any new posts about Ikaria island in the future, I hope that those two posts are enough to help the reader have a good image about Ikaria island. It is now one of  my top destinations and I;m looking forward to visit it again.

Ikaria island - Ικαρία

Ikaria island resides at the North-East Aegean sea, south of Chios,  west of Samos, northwest of Fourni Corseon.
Η Ικαρία βρίσκεται στο Βορειο Ανατολικό Αιγαίο, νότια της Χίου, δυτικά της Σάμου και βορειοδυτικά των Φούρνων Κορσεών.

It's an island that somehow made a mythic cloud inside me, a mysterious unknown, as stories from people who had visited it, came to me surrounded by a sense of mystery and adventure.

Ειναι ενα νησί που κάπως το  περιέβαλλε ο μύθος μέσα μου, το μυστηριώδες άγνωστο, καθώς οι ιστορίες που άκουγα απο άλλους περιβάλλονταν απο ενα πέπλο μυστηρίου και περιπέτειας.

The boat from Piraeus is sailing all night long to reach Evdilos harbor ( marked with an A on the above map) around 4:35' am. The first thing I wanted was a good greek coffee and some loukoumades ( ball donuts with honey and cinammon ).

Το πλοίο απο Πειραιά ταξίδευε όλη νύχτα για να φτάσει στην Εύδηλο κατα τις 4.35'  το πρωί. Το πρώτο ικαριώτικο πράγμα που δοκίμασα ηταν καφές ελληνικός και λουκουμάδες :)

The first light came up in the sky around 5.15' am and it was magic, as well as  the sunrise,about an hour later.

Το πρώτο φως  της μέρας  φάνηκε στον ορίζοντα γύρω στις 5.15' και ήταν μαγικό, όπως και η ανατολή του ήλιου καμμια ωρα μετά.

Holidays in Ikaria includes good food, nice people, beautiful villages, fishing, traditional folklor festivals and sun and sea. Also some hiking if you want to visit nice places including ancient greek ruins and wild gorges, impressive places where mother nature just shows you how little you are.

Στην Ικαρία έχεις καλό φαγητό, ψάρεμα, καλούς ανθρώπους,  όμορφα χωριά, παραδοσιακά πανηγύρια,ήλιο και θάλασσα. Ακόμα μπορείς να περπατήσεις αν θες να δεις κάποια μέρη όπως αρχαία ερείπια και άγρια φαράγγια, εντυπωσιακά μέρη όπου η μητέρα Φύση σε κάνει να νιώθεις πόσο μικρός  εισαι μπροστά της.

The island of Ikaria has only a few sandy beaches,  most of them at the northern part between Gialiskari and Armenistis where you can also park your car close to the beach and walk a few meters to the beach.

Η Ικαρία έχει λίγες αμμουδερές παραλίες, οι περισσότερες στο βόρειο κομμάτι μεταξύ  Αρμενιστή και Γιαλισκαρίου, που ειναι και πιο εύκολα προσβάσιμες, κοντά στο δρόμο.

The above photo is taken at Livadi beach close to Armenistis and next photo  from Messakti beach, east of Livadi. Some beach bars offer coffee and drinks. The umbrellas are not free, they cost 5 euros for one umbrella and two seats, then if you want one more seat you have to pay 2 more euros.

Η επάνω φωτογραφία ειναι απο το Λιβάδι, κοντά στον Αρμενιστή. Η επόμενη ειναι απο την Μεσσακτή, 2 λεπτά δρόμο ανατολικά απο το Λιβάδι.

Next photos are taken at Nas beach, a famous place with the ruins of an ancient Temple dedicated to goddess Artemis. That place was a fjiord  used as a harbor many centuries ago ! I couldn't believe it but it's true.

Αυτες εδω οι φωτογραφίες ειναι απο την διάσημη παραλία του Νά με τα ερείπια του ναού της Ταυροπόλου Αρτέμιδος. Αυτο το μέρος πρίν κάμποσους αιώνες ηταν ενα βαθύ φιόρδ και ήταν λιμάνι ! Απίστευτο και όμως ετσι ειναι.

Η κατάβαση στην παραλία γίνεται με τα πόδια απο  ενα μονοπάτι και ειναι λιγο κουραστική ειδικά αν θες να ξανανέβεις επάνω. Αξίζει όμως τον κόπο. Στην παραλία υπάρχει ενα σκοινί για να μπορούν οι κολυμβητές να βγούν έξω. Το δυνατό κύμα δεν σε αφήνει να βγείς ! Αμάν !
Απο την κορυφή μπορεί κανείς  να απολαύσει ενα απο τα ομορφότερα ηλιοβασιλέματα.

If you want to reach the beach, you have to walk to it on a path and it is a bit hard especially when you wish to go back up ! But it worths it. At the beach there is a rope which swimmers may use to help themselves get out of the water, as the strong waves do not allow an easy get out of the sea ! Wow.

From the top you can see one of the best sunsets.

Η περιήγηση στο νησί εχει ευχάριστες εκπλήξεις. Μικρά χωριά ψηλά και άλλα στη θάλασσα εχουν μια ηρεμία που μοιάζει υπέροχα μοναδική. Με τα πόδια ή με όχημα για χωματόδρομο, μπορείς να φτάσεις σε όμορφα μέρη και να απολαύσεις μπάνιο και ηρεμία.

The villages are not big, most houses are white, some stone made with an architecture close to the Dodecanese islands. You often find yourself at places where in some way the time flows slowly, without any stress, no hurry. This is one of the secrets for the Ikarians long living.

Τα χωριά δεν ειναι μεγάλα, τα πιο πολλά σπίτια ειναι λευκά και μερικά πετρόκτιστα με την αρχιτεκτονική τους να πλησιάζει πιο πολύ Δωδεκάνησα. Συχνά βρίσκεσαι σε μέρη όπου κάπως ο χρόνος εχει σχεδόν σταματήσει πάει αργά, χωρίς άγχος, χωρίς βιασύνη. να ενα μυστικό της μακροζωίας των Ικαριωτών.



At next post, I will give more pictures to help anyone take a good idea of how Ikaria island is, however I suggest you to visit the island and let it dominate your hearts and your minds.

Στο επόμενο άρθρο θα δώσω πιο πολλές φωτογραφίες και θα προσπαθήσω να δώσω με αυτές  μια καλή ιδέα του πώς ειναι η Ικαρία αν και το καλύτερο ειναι να πας εκεί και να αφήσεις το νησί να κυριέψει το μυαλό και την καρδιά σου.

Stone "forest" / Το πέτρινο δάσος

Στην προηγούμενη ανάρτηση είδαμε την περιοχή γύρω απο το χωριό Μονοδένδρι στο Κεντρικό Ζαγόρι. Λίγα λεπτά δρόμος, πιο ψηλά απο το Μονοδένδρι,

δρόμος φιδογυρίζει ανεβαίνοντας στο βουνό κι άλλο, δίνοντας σου μια αίσθηση όμορφη εκει πάνω, που δεν ξερω να την περιγράψω αλλιώς.
Κατ'αρχήν δεν εχει έλατα, παρά το οτι θα πίστευε κανείς οτι σε τέτιοι υψόμετρο θα έπρεπε να εχει και έλατα.
Και όσο προχωράς, τόσο ψάχνεις να βρείς πού ειναι αυτο το "πέτρινο δάσος" που λέει η πινακίδα στο χωριό.
Εν τέλει συνειδητοποιείς οτι βρίσκεσαι ήδη σε αυτό, απλά ο δρόμος περνά ανάμεσά του.
Πρέπει να σταματήσεις και να κατέβεις για να θαυμάσεις αυτο το μοναδικό θέαμα, που απο οσα εχω δει εγω, μόνο με κατι σαν τα Μετέωρα μπορώ να το συγκρίνω κάπως.
Οι πέτρες ειναι στρωμένες σαν να τις εχει τοποθετήσει ανθρώπου χέρι.
Οι εικόνες μιλούν απο μόνες τους κι ελπίζω να μπορούν να δείξουν αυτο που είδα.

 
In my last post we saw the area around the Monodendri village in Central Zagori.
A few minutes drive from there, a little higher than Monodendri, the road is turning like a snake climbing up the mountain, giving us a sense of beauty up there, which I can't describe in better words.
No fir trees, despite the belief that in that altitude there, we should see fir trees.
We kept driving looking for something that would look like a "stone forest" ? No road sign after that small one at the exit of Monodendri village.
Finally, we realize that we are already inside that stone forest and we pass thru it !
We stopped to gaze that miraculously astonishing view, at least something that I can compare only to the Meteora rocks, of those I have seen in my life.

 Stones are like as if a human hand put them that way !
